Hey I’m Coach Brian - a Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist with a Masters Degree in Exercise Science.
I've dedicated the last 16 years of my career to working at the cutting edge of training and exercise science.
As a Functional Movement Specialist, I know it's crucial to separate fact from fiction when it comes to training and performance. Step behind the headlines and you
get the real story.
…I’m in the gym every day experimenting through endless trial-and-error
…I apply what works to my clients and the results successfully come back over and over again, so… in short, I know what WORKS.
One thing all my best clients of all ages have in common is that they spend minimal time on stretching. You would think this would leave them stiff, tight and sore but nothing could be further from the truth. These super clients are actually very nimble and I’ll share how in just a moment. Could it be that stretching is not
all it’s cut out to be?
I’d like to share with you 6 reasons why stretching is overrated.
You’ll need to pay close attention because these reasons could be the difference between feeling 10 years younger than you are versus 10 years
older.
Reason #1:
Stretching is Passive not Active
When you stretch, you're usually holding a position to lengthen a muscle. Sure, it feels good and can increase your flexibility, but here’s the kicker: it doesn’t teach your body how to use that flexibility in everyday movements. Imagine being able to touch your toes but still feeling stiff when bending over to pick something up. Active movement, not passive stretching, helps your body apply flexibility in real-world situations, keeping you functional and nimble.
Reason #2:
Stretching Doesn’t Improve Joint Stability
While stretching can make you more flexible, it doesn’t do much for stabilizing your joints. Think of your joints like hinges—flexibility might make them
swing wider, but without strong muscles surrounding them, they become less secure. The last thing you want is to be flexible but wobbly! That’s like having a
door that swings wide open but can’t handle a gust of wind. If you don’t strengthen the muscles around your joints, increased flexibility could actually make
you more prone to injuries, not less.
Reason #3:
Stretching Usually Isolates a Muscle
Stretching tends to focus on one muscle at a time, but your body doesn’t move that way. When you bend down, reach, or twist, your muscles work in harmony, not isolation. So, while stretching a single muscle might feel good, it doesn’t teach your body how to move more efficiently as a whole. What you need is full-body coordination, where your muscles and joints work together like a well-oiled machine, not a bunch of separate parts.
Reason #4:
Stretching Doesn’t Always Prevent Injuries
We’ve been led to believe for years that stretching before exercise is like an insurance policy against injuries. But here’s the truth: stretching alone doesn’t give you the strength to control your body in those newly lengthened positions. You might gain flexibility, but without the strength to back it up, you’re just as vulnerable—if not more so—to pulling something or getting hurt. It’s like having a slingshot without enough tension; sure, it stretches, but it won’t do much when you need to fire.
Reason #5:
It’s Not the Best Way to Warm Up (and Can Be Boring)
Let’s face it—holding a static stretch for 30 seconds can be mind-numbing, and it’s not the best way to get your body ready for action. Stretching doesn’t get your heart pumping or your muscles firing. A dynamic warm-up, on the other hand, does all that while keeping you engaged and primed for your workout. Think movements that challenge your balance, coordination, and strength—now that’s a warm-up that sets you up for success and actually feels like fun.
Reason #6:
You Think You Want to Be Flexible But What You Really Need is Mobility
Most people think flexibility is the key to feeling loose and agile, but here’s the truth: mobility is what you’re actually after. Flexibility is simply the ability of a muscle to stretch and lengthen, which might let you bend a little further. But without the strength and control to support those movements, flexibility is like a car with a fast engine but no brakes—it's useless without the power to control it.
Mobility, on the other hand, is the full package. It combines flexibility with the strength and coordination needed to actively and safely move your
joints through their entire range of motion. So while flexibility helps you stretch, mobility is what allows you to bend, twist, and move through your day-to-day life with ease and confidence. It’s the difference between being able to touch your toes and being able to squat, lift, and move without pain or discomfort. What you really want is the freedom to move well, not just stretch far!
Moving Freely & Feeling Better Can Actually Be Easy If You Know How…
If you’re like most people you stretch because you want to enhance your quality of life. Whether it’s preventing an injury or reducing pain you want to keep your
independence and ability to engage more fully in activities and hobbies.
So, it’s not just about being flexible—it’s about being able to move well and stay strong and steady while doing it!
That’s why I created the… EASY MOBILITY Routine …utilizing
Flexi-Fusion Moves.
It combines the idea of flexibility with the concept of integrating different movement skills into one dynamic mobility routine.
These functional movement patterns focus on foundational moves essential for daily activities.
These Flexi-Fusion Moves mimic everyday tasks like bending, lifting, and twisting, which are crucial for improving overall efficiency, coordination, and function.
By integrating multiple muscle groups, Flexi-Fusion Moves enhance stability and flexibility, enabling you to move freely and pain-free while preventing injuries to make everyday movements easier with less discomfort.
For those who sit for long periods (like most of us) I paid special attention to muscle groups that typically become tight or weak including:
Hip Flexors which shorten and tighten from prolonged sitting.
Glutes & Core which weaken as they become less active.
Neck & Shoulders need special attention due to poor sitting posture.
Upper & Lower Back might be the king of all discomfort and kinks.
Now let me tell you what you get in my Easy Mobility Routine
Follow Along Workout Video
You get instant digital access to the routine. If you do both circuits for 3 rounds each the entire routine takes 30-minutes. But you can do less rounds or just one of the routines if you have less time. You can do the routine as a stand alone workout or as a warm up before you exercise or as a cooldown after you exercise.
Even if you do the routine only once a week you’ll feel the difference. Of course if you want to it would be beneficial to do daily. It’s up to you.
You can watch the routine on your phone or tablet or you can cast or mirror to your TV. It’s your routine so you can download it or stream it.
And don’t worry if you're a total newbie or haven’t worked out in 2 decades. It is called “Easy Mobility” after all.
I'll guide you through every exercise step-by-step, like I'm right there with you.
Movement Guide PDF
The Movement Guide PDF is a handy companion to the Easy Mobility Routine follow-along video. It features clear descriptions, definitions, and pictures of all the
exercises, making it easy to understand and follow.
Ideal for those who have done the routine a few times, it’s perfect for quick reference when you need a refresher on the order of exercises. Simply bring it along as a convenient guide when you want to stay on track, even without the video.

Loved this 30 minute work out, they are hard to find. I suffered a serious knee injury while attending a school sponsored Jump Rope A Thon. Tore my ACL, MCL and Meniscus, and had to be wheeled out on a stretcher. Two surgeries, 100+ physical therapy sessions and the end result is permanent disability to my right knee. The reason I share this is because I was actually able to complete these exercises, yes with some adaptations, yet still get a fantastic strength training workout!

I work in retail which means standing without being able to sit for anywhere between 8 to 12 hours 5 to 6 days a week. These stretches SAVED me from the hip and @$$ pain of the day. THANK YOU!

@NikkiLouiseCarney
You hit the nail on the head! I am a professional dancer and I have injured the muscle from my glute down the back of my leg, I also have extremely tight hip flexors (noticed more in the past couple of years as injured one too!) This video was perfect, if I try and stretch without guidance I don't do enough and probably not the correct technique, so I just "needed someone to stretch with" and guide me! Nikki
